II. Secong Sight
“Mom, I’m leaving!” Yamah announced to his mother while carrying his baggage down the stairs. He was just about to leave to the school dorms when he heard her say something.
“Take care son” she said in a fragile voice, almost as if she didn’t want to say it but did anyway. Every time her son departed to the school dorms, she felt sad, but not because she didn’t spend enough time with him on his school breaks, but because she felt that with each passing day they became more and more distant.
“Sure” was all that Yamah answered. As if you did care back then, he continued speaking in his mind, not even wanting to face his mother when he crossed the main door of his house with his baggage being pulled by his right hand. The door closed silently and then the woman was left alone once again. She sat on the couch sighing slowly, and placed her hand over her eyes, starting to sob in silence.
Yamah stood at the bus stop around the corner, waiting until the bus arrived. He boarded the vehicle, and sat at the last row of seats near the window, placing his baggage close to him on empty seat next to him. This time he would get to share his bedroom with another student. Since they were having so many transfer students and a lot of new freshmen this year, they had to optimize their living space. It was indeed a good time for the NPHS, becoming more popular than past years.
Yamah hated sharing things, especially if it was the room where he slept and passed most of his time after school. Who could be the idiot wanting to be my roommate? Although I think that is not his choice after all, he deliberated. It was obvious the main authorities of the school would decide that, just like they decided he had to share his room with a stranger. I just hope it won’t be Kurumada.
Finally, the bus stopped at the corner next to the school’s dorms. He got off the vehicle, pulling his bag full of clothing, and began walking towards the entrance of the dorms. The complex had a modern, almost futuristic look, with three not so tall buildings, each one with its own name. He was going to stay in the same room, at the Aldrich tower; it was named after one of the founders of the school. The other two towers’ names were the Moore tower – probably a relative of the Moore cousins, and the Cynhard tower. All foreign last names, even though their school was located in Japan. It was somewhat funny to Yamah that one of the best private high schools for boys was built by outsiders.
Walking towards the entrance of the tower, he casually met Koji, who was now wearing a casual outfit. Yamah was still using his uniform, he didn’t have time to change at home – or was just in a big hurry to leave his house.
“Oi, Yamah!” Koji greeted the white haired boy with his right hand waving in the air.
“Hi” was all that Yamah responded, with an invisible smile.
“Are you staying in the same room?” Koji asked.
“Seems like it” Yamah answered and kept walking, reaching the elevator and pressing the button. “Although I already hate that stupid policy about sharing rooms…” he continued with discontempt in his voice.
Koji couldn’t help it but laugh a little. Yamah just stared at him with a questioning look; the doors to the elevator opened, allowing the boys to enter.
“C’mon, I think it will be fun to share a room with another person. You get to meet new people, plus it will broaden your horizons”, Koji said with a big smile in his lips.
“Whatever”, the silver-haired boy shrugged at his friend’s over optimistic expression, and pressed the button to his floor, which was the 3rd one.
“Hey, I’m staying on the same floor!” Koji said very excited. Yamah just remained silent the whole trip to the third floor, leaning his body over the elevator’s wall.
The doors opened slowly and both boys came out of the elevator, Yamah going left, and Koji to the right down the corridor. “Well, c’ya Yamah. I have to get my stuff properly organized for the newcomer”, the blonde boy said with a smile on his face. He is just too damn friendly!, Yamah couldn’t help but shout that in his mind. Not that he was wishing to be like Koji, but it was just that his affability sometimes irritated him.
The young man walked without hurry down the long corridor, pulling his bag, not minding the other students who were also arriving at their new rooms, and meeting their new roomies with cheerful greets and smiling faces. That sight just made Yamah sick. There was so much hypocrisy in the air that it was almost unbearable. He hurried his pace, and finally reached his room. The door had the number 40 on it, and it was the last door at the end of the corridor. In some way that room was perfect for Yamah, who didn’t like to be surrounded by others. He enjoyed being in the corner.
Taking out his key from his pants pocket, he introduced it trough the keyhole, twisting it and opening the door to his room. He looked at it for a few seconds before entering it, realizing that it was almost empty which was just like he liked it; only a desk with a lamp over it, a window with white curtains, a bookshelf, the closet, and his bed. The rooms at NPHS were huge compared to other schools’ dorms, so two people could live quite comfortably in only one. Of course, he later noticed the second bed placed beside his own; a brand-new bed with two big bags on it, probably full of clothes and personal objects. Wait a minute…, Yamah thought for a moment, where is my roommate??
“Hello” a male voice from behind greeted the silver haired youth. Yamah thought he had recognized the voice, and immediately turned around to see a brunette guy, leaning on the door of the room. The boy gave him a soft smile, but then returned to his regular serious features.
“E-Eiji?” Yamah could barely pronounce his name. He just couldn’t believe that the new boy was going to be his roommate.
“Surprised?” Eiji asked, while opening his bags and arranging his clothes into the closet, not wanting to waste any time. He was also still wearing his school uniform, which by the way, Yamah thought suited him perfectly. What the hell am I thinking?, Yamah poked his own head, closing his eyes real tight. I can’t be thinking of how good another guy looks! It is… it is wrong!’. Yamah couldn’t stop walking around nervously while a slight blush appeared on his cheeks. What the fuck? Why does my face feel so hot??
“Something wrong?” Eiji asked Yamah with little concern about his roommate’s strange behavior. He could notice Yamah was feeling a little bit uncomfortable in his presence.
“Eh? No, nothing” Yamah tried to keep it cool, clearing his throat a little. Eiji turned around again shrugging and returning to his clothes. Yamah then decided to emulate Eiji’s actions and he also opened his bag (small compared to Eiji’s) and began arranging his clothes and placing them in the nearest drawers. He also took out of his bag some hard cover notebooks, one of them Yamah used it to write his thoughts and another one where he liked to solve advanced mathematic problems he could only understand. Doing that relaxed him in some way. But he still couldn’t take this thought out of his mind. It was such a strange coincidence that he and Eiji would be staying in the same room.
After a few minutes both boys finished accommodating their stuff, neither of them said a word during the whole process. The school decided to divide the closet space into equal parts; but it was obvious Eiji’s clothes occupied more space than Yamah’s.
“You got a lot of clothes” Yamah mentioned, trying to sound as casual as possible. “Did your dad buy you all this stuff?” he continued, pointing at all his other personal objects, like books, a portable computer and even some expensive lotions.
“Nope. I bought them myself” the brunette responded with a slight smile.
“No way! You bought them?” the silver haired boy asked in amaze. How could he buy all this expensive stuff? Does he…?
“Yes, I do have a job” the other boy said before Yamah could ask him anything. “Well… is more like a gig I do once in a while. Leaves good money”.
“I can notice…” Yamah said, letting out a small sigh. “Wish I had the time. Or at least try to keep one” he said, recalling the last time he was fired because of his antisocial attitude towards the clients at a grocery store.
It seemed that Eiji didn’t really care about what Yamah was saying, he only walked towards the main door and closed it, and almost immediately he took off his jacket, beginning to unbutton his white shirt, letting his chiseled body show of. Yamah noticed this, and a sudden impulse made him stare brazenly at his new partner stripping in front of him. But then he reacted, turning his head around and trying to look at the other side. Why am I feeling so nervous? Is not the first time I see a naked guy, he reasoned while remembering the shower room, where you could see everyone naked, although it wasn’t of Yamah’s approval.
Eiji finished stripping, letting only his rather revealing underwear on. “I’m going to take a shower if you don’t mind” he said, while taking his towel with him inside the bathroom.
“Er… sure, no prob” the silver haired boy answered with difficulty, not before swallowing hard at the incredible sight. He had never seen such a beautiful body, let alone a male one. Stop it! Stop it! He poked his head again, this time harder.
Ack… I need fresh air, he thought, and went to the window to open it. A soft breeze entered the room, lifting Eiji’s white shirt over his bed a little. Something caught Yamah’s eye, inside the left shirt pocket. He got closer, sitting over the bed; he could hear how the water was beginning to flow from the shower, giving him a little more confidence to peek into the pocket. This is wrong… I shouldn’t do it. Oh, what the hell! Without thinking anymore, he slid his fingers inside, taking out a small square plastic wrapper. It showed the siluette of something that looked like a big ring, in fact, it looked like a…
“A condom?!” Koji shouted absolutely surprised. People around began to stare at them with strange looks.
“You didn’t have to repeat it so loud, you moron!” Yamah tried not to shout in public. They were now at one of the huge gardens inside the NPHS campus, sitting in one of the few benches near the cafeteria building.
“Sorry about that…” the ash blonde boy apologized. “But… a condom??” he repeated again, pretty amused and with a huge smile on his face, trying to cover it with his hand.
“I never thought he was so sex obsessed to always keep a condom with him” Yamah took out a cigarette from his pocket and placed it between his lips; he was now wearing a gray tank top and black jeans. He pulled out a zippo lighter from his jeans and lit the cigarette, giving it a soft blow and letting the white smoke come out of his nostrils.
“Don’t be stupid. Maybe he has a girlfriend, a pretty easy one” Koji replied contradicting Yamah’s argument.
“In a boy’s private school?” Yamah questioned his friend. Koji just moved his head in denial, laughing a little.
“Wrong again” Koji placed one of his hands over the silver haired boy’s shoulder. Then Koji noticed something in his friend that he has never noticed before. “Are you… jealous?”
Yamah was caught off guard. He coughed the smoke of the cigarette at such ridiculous question. “Are you some kind of idiot? How could I be jealous? I mean, I barely know the guy… and he IS a guy!” he tried to make it sound as reasonable as possible. Although he should admit he was feeling a little upset about it.
“Ok…” Koji replied, leaning his body over the bench.
“I just thought it was weird… he doesn’t look like the type who would be carrying a condom everywhere” Yamah also leaned his body over the bench, inhaling the sweet aroma of his cigarette.
“So, who is your roommate? You haven’t told me yet”.
“I didn’t think it was really necessary since your roommate is way more interesting” Koji said in a joking tone. Yamah just gave him one of his killer looks and Koji just smiled as he usually did.
“His name is Touga. A freshman. He is from a little town near Kyoto, and he looks pretty calm and shy” Koji continued, trying to remember his features while Yamah listened. “Oh, and he has a dog”.
“A dog? I thought this school didn’t allow pets” Yamah questioned.
“It doesn’t. But Touga must have a very convincing father, because they are letting him keep the dog” Koji intuited.
“What’s the dog’s name?”
“Brayden” the blonde boy answered. “Akita Inu breed. That dog is so cool looking!”
“It has a weird name too,” Yamah answered, and then threw his cigarette on the floor, crunching it with his black boots. “I gotta go. I still need to do that math homework”.
“Piece of cake for you, man” Koji replied. “Don’t you wanna hang out with me and the guys? Shiro said he found this awesome snack bar around the corner”.
“Nah… but thanks for asking” the silver haired boy responded, standing up from his seat and beginning to walk towards his dorm, with his hands inside his jeans’ pockets.
“Ok” Koji answered, still sitting on the bench, waiting to meet with the others.
Yamah kept walking until he reached the dorm’s lobby where other boys were spending their free time. He stopped in front of the elevator and pushed the button, waiting for it to arrive. Just when the doors opened, a familiar figure appeared, leaving Yamah quite shocked.
“Kurumada…”
“Ah… fate must want us to keep meeting in this lovely day” the spiky haired blonde spoke with a smirk and pushed Yamah’s body with his own, stronger one so he could get off the elevator. He grabbed Yamah by his shirt, pulling him closer to his face. Yamah tried to get away from Kurumada’s hand, but it was useless. The blond was way stronger than he was, and he could almost feel how his feet floated from the floor.
“Let go of me, Kurumada… I have more important things to do than waste my time with an over sized blonde gorilla like you” the silver haired boy dared to threaten the other youth.
“You little punk…” the blonde guy was about to explode but then he felt a hand behind his back, making Kurumada turn around hastily. Another blonde, with aqua colored eyes was standing behind them.
“Stop it already. You two behave like small kids. Grow up” the long haired blonde said, almost in a mocking tone. Yamah could distinguish the weird Japanese accent. It was of course one of the Moore cousins, and not any of them, but the most exasperating and presumptuous of them all.
“Get lost, Demian” Kurumada replied, staring once again at Yamah.
“How do you think I will be able to ‘get lost’ if you keep blocking the elevator door?” Demian responded with a calm, but irritating tone in his voice. “Move, you bloody bastard” he said in his British accent.
“What did you say?” Kurumada was getting mad, and he finally let Yamah go from his grasp.
“He said that you should get out of the way, you punkass”, Yamah translated Demian’s words. He ran inside the elevator quickly, so Kurumada could not reach him anymore, and left both of the blondes staring at each other. He really didn't want to see how Demian was going to verbally attack Kenji, or how Kenji would physically retaliate. Demian was pretty agile himself and would probably be able to block a punch or two until his cousins, Kiefer and Brandon, arrived. Yamah had just looked at it countless times that it was becoming a boring routine. Those Moore cousins had some issues with all the students, since they thought they were more important than the rest.
“English…” Yamah whispered while the elevator went up, stopping at his floor. He walked out and after some seconds he reached his room, introducing the key and opening it. It was dark now; but he could notice the lights of his room were on. He got inside and just after he entered, Eiji came out of the bathroom.
“Hi” Eiji said to Yamah, and opened the door of their room preparing to leave.
“Hey, where are you going?” the silver haired boy asked his brunette classmate who was now wearing a red and black t-shirt and jeans.
“I have a job to do. See you later” he said and walked outside the room. Yamah let out another sigh, he was going to ask him what kind of job he had, but it was too late since Eiji had already left the room.
“By the way…” Eiji returned and just popped his head by the door frame, “…your calculation on the parabola had a small mistake, which I corrected. Bye” he showed the peace and love sign with his fingers and left again.
What?? The other boy was left with a puzzled expression. He took his math notebook quickly and opened it to the last page, where that parabola problem was. Eiji was right. It had a small miscalculation and now it was completely correct. How the fuck did he…?! This is advanced calculus! There is no way he could have learned this at school yet! Besides, how dare he check on my personal stuff!
Yamah quickly left the notebook over the bed and ran outside his room, hoping he could find Eiji still there. Unfortunately, the brunette had already gone on the elevator. Yamah decided it was no use chasing him all the way down, maybe Eiji had already left the building. But still, he was completely amazed about his new roommate; could it be possible that Eiji was as intelligent, if not more intelligent than he was? Yamah looked at his nightstand clock. It marked 8 pm. He still had to do his math homework.
Still somewhat stunned, he entered the bathroom and opened the faucet, filling the bathtub with warm water. Taking off all his clothes, he entered the bathtub and let out a long, deep sigh. He was trying not to think of Eiji anymore; of course it was useless. The minutes passed along, the warm delicious water all around his body made him feel sleepy. I will finish that homework tomorrow. After some more minutes, he finished his bath and dried himself, going directly to bed. Pulling his sheets over his naked body, he turned the lights off from the near switch, drifting into sleep.
