THE MAKING OF: Eiji, the Dark Nephillim

This is just a step-by-step of the making of this Eiji illustration.

WHAT I USED:
For the pencil sketch:

For digital sketch/illustration:

1. SKETCHING

What I first did was a preliminar sketch of the entire pic. It was drawn on a 8 x 10 in sheet of paper, with a mechanical pencil.

The drawing itself wasn't complete, since the paper wasn't big enough and so Eiji's back was not fully drawn.

After I scanned the thing in a b/w 300dpi setting, I finished the back and horns with Photoshop CS2 and my trusty digital tablet.

This is how the preliminar sketch looks after fixing it.

Later, in Photoshop CS2, I add more details to the drawing. At first, I was planning to leave Eiji with his naked torso, but then I thought it would look nicer and more 'colorful' if I made him wear his black suit.

So, in Photoshop I begin drawing the details of the suit with a hard round brush. I use a reference pic for that, my memory is not as good as you may think, even if it is a character of mine =P

This is a close up, where you can see the original pencil lines and Photoshop's brush lines.

After some more minutes working on the sketch, this is the final look of the drawing now. I will now begin the inking process, and I can choose from two options:

  1. Print the sketch in cyan tones, then ink the traditional way or,
  2. Ink directly in the computer using a tablet and a program to do it.
